The 13 Colonies
The first colonies which helped to create a framework for not only what our new nation would look like, but also how individual states would function under a Federal government are at the forefront of our studies in this unit. By learning facts about each of these 13 colonies along with founders, historic events, and even common trades for the time period, students will be amazed at how different life is today because of this innovative and historical region of the United States!

Native Americans
Native Americans are an integral part of our nation's history. While we may know the names of a few famous natives such as Sitting Bull, Sacagawea, or Pocahontas, there are many others who have shaped US history and assisted early European settlers as they tried to make it in the 'new world.' There are many interesting elements to studying our past, including the original Americans!
Math Projects
5th Grade Dream Home
At the end of the year, our class will dive into a dream house project where each person is able build the house they could only dream of! The catch, we have to use our math minds to help us figure out various elements: area of rooms, perimeters, etc. while also considering budgets and practicality! This is a fun project that your student could only DREAM of doing!
Twelve Days of Christmas
The "12 Days of Christmas" is a wonderful, traditional Christmas carol. But have you ever wondered how much it would cost today to actually BUY all of those gifts, which by the way... are mostly birds? For this math assignment, we are not only going to find out how much it would cost to purchase all of the 12 Days of Christmas gifts, but we are also going to update the Christmas song to a more modern version.
Christmas Around the World
Christmas is celebrated in many different ways around the world. Students will research a country and see what they do for Christmas. See if you can persuade Santa to spend Christmas with you by telling him all about the celebrations in your country. Your group will create a PowerPoint or Prezi presentation to present to the class showing how your country celebrates Christmas.

Invention Convention
Some of our greatest inventions and ideas have come from someone thinking about how to do something different or better than it's been done before. I want to encourage that kind of thinking in our 5th grade classroom! While you are at school, you will work to find an inventor, research them and write a report with your findings. You will then get a chance to do some inventing on your own!
Christmas Around the World
Merry Christmas! Feliz Navidad! Joyeux Noel! Did you know that children in many different countries are just as excited as you are about Christmas? BUT, Santa is different in these other places, or may not even exist at all! We all have traditions and customs that help us to look forward to this time of the year. In this webquest, you will research about a country and how the children celebrate Christmas there!
